The Interview

In conversation with Alter Ego MusicLab

How did you start making music with AI?

I started making music with AI out of curiosity and a desire to explore new creative possibilities. I had ideas, emotions and stories I wanted to turn into music, but AI opened doors that would have been difficult for me to reach on my own. Over time, I developed my own artistic identity as Alter Ego MusicLab. For me, AI is not a replacement for human creativity. It is a tool that helps me give sound to what I imagine. I call this approach “Algofonia”: music generated with AI, guided by human ideas and artistic choices.

What does AI do in your creative process — and what stays human?

AI can generate melodies, arrangements, voices and sounds, but it does not decide what I want to express. The human part begins with the idea, the emotion, the story and the meaning behind a song. I choose the direction, write or shape the lyrics, experiment with musical styles and judge the results. Sometimes I reject a generation and start again. Other times, an unexpected result inspires a new idea. AI brings possibilities; I give them purpose. The final work reflects a dialogue between technology and human imagination.

Tell us about "Fuori Scala". How was it made?

“Fuori Scala” is an avant-garde jazz-rock fusion track built around an unconventional idea: what if being out of tune with the world were a style of its own? I developed the concept, wrote the lyrics and designed the musical direction through detailed prompts. I wanted an unpredictable arrangement with odd time signatures, dissonant harmonies, virtuosic guitars and horns, and a female voice that shifts from smoky, ironic speech to dramatic, almost operatic singing. The voice becomes another instrument, interacting with the guitars and horns. The lyrics play with imperfection, disorder and the pressure to fit in. The character does not try to correct herself anymore. She turns her supposed mistakes into her own rhythm. AI helped me bring this unusual musical idea to life, but the concept, words, artistic direction and creative decisions were mine. The result is a playful, theatrical track about the freedom to be different.

“AI creates possibilities. Human imagination gives them meaning.”

Which tools do you use, and how?

I mainly use Suno to generate music from my ideas and detailed prompts. I work on lyrics, themes, moods, musical styles and song structures, making creative choices throughout the process. I experiment with different sounds and arrangements until the result comes closer to what I imagine. I also use audio editing tools when I need to work on recordings. The technology provides possibilities, but I decide what to explore, what to change and what feels right for the song.

What does it mean to be an Italian artist in the AI music scene?

Being an Italian artist means bringing my own cultural background, musical memories and sensitivity into a new creative world. Italy has a rich musical heritage, but I do not want to be limited to one tradition or genre. Through Alter Ego MusicLab, I explore different musical languages and connect with listeners around the world. AI makes it possible to cross boundaries, but every artistic choice still comes from a human perspective. I believe this new music scene should be a place for curiosity, originality and honest expression, regardless of where an artist comes from.

What's next for you?

I want to keep exploring music without being confined to a single genre. Every project is an opportunity to experiment, tell a different story and discover new sounds. I am also developing the idea of Algofonia as a way to describe music created with AI but guided by human imagination and artistic intent. My goal is to keep creating music that means something to me and, hopefully, reaches people in different parts of the world. I do not want to follow a formula. I want to remain curious and see where each new idea takes me.

What do you hope listeners will discover in your music?

I hope listeners will discover emotions and ideas that speak to them, even when they come from a different culture or speak a different language. Music can cross borders without asking permission. I want to experiment freely, challenge expectations and give space to thoughts that do not always fit into conventional categories. If a song makes someone stop, think, smile or feel understood, then it has found its purpose. For me, that human connection is what makes creating music worthwhile.
