The Interview

In conversation with SteampunkPlagueDoctor

Interview by IAIMA team · 2026-10-22 · 5 min read

How did you start making music with AI?

I began making AI music to turn my imagination into a complete artistic world. SteampunkPlagueDoctor (S.P.D.) is not just a musical project: it combines original music, steampunk cosplay, theatrical performance and a distinctive masked character. My sound blends industrial metal, symphonic arrangements and dark fantasy atmospheres. AI allows me to explore new musical possibilities, but the artistic vision, identity, storytelling and stage concept come from me. My goal is to create an immersive experience in which music, costume and performance become one.

What does AI do in your creative process — and what stays human?

AI can help generate melodies, vocals and arrangements, but it does not define the artistic identity of SteampunkPlagueDoctor. The human contribution begins with the ideas, emotions, stories, creative decisions and the world I build around the music. I choose the direction, shape the prompts and bring the project to life through its character, costume and performances. In “Il Caos di Leon”, the lyrics began with me and my son. AI helped turn our idea into a song. For me, the most exciting possibilities emerge when technology serves human imagination rather than replacing it.

Tell us about "Il Caos di Leon ". How was it made?

“Il Caos di Leon” is a deeply personal track inspired by the creativity I share with my son Leon. I wrote the lyrics with his help, then used ChatGPT to organise them for music production and refine the creative prompt. PNPB Music generated the melody, vocals and instrumental arrangement. The song reflects how human imagination and AI can work together: the story and emotional starting point are personal, while AI helps transform our ideas into a complete musical piece. It is also part of my wider artistic world as SteampunkPlagueDoctor (S.P.D.), where music, storytelling and visual identity meet.

“I give AI a voice, but the vision, the passion and the soul are human.”

Which tools do you use, and how?

I use PNPB Music to generate musical elements from prompts developed around my creative vision. I use ChatGPT to develop concepts, structure lyrics and refine prompts. I make deliberate choices about genre, atmosphere, instrumentation and vocal direction. Beyond music generation, I build the visual identity of SteampunkPlagueDoctor through my plague-doctor mask, steampunk costume, artwork and theatrical stage presence. I also edit promotional videos and create content to present the project to audiences. I bring these elements together to create a recognisable artistic experience that goes beyond a recorded song.

What does it mean to be an Italian artist in the AI music scene?

For me, being an Italian artist in AI music means bringing imagination, theatricality and a strong visual identity into a new creative landscape. Italy has a rich musical and artistic heritage, and I explore it through my own combination of industrial metal, symphonic sound and steampunk fantasy. SteampunkPlagueDoctor connects music with cosplay and live performance, creating a character audiences can see as well as hear. Through La Musica Unisce, I also support collaboration between artists and different creative approaches. I want to help show how AI music can become part of a broader artistic experience.

What's next for you?

My goal is to develop SteampunkPlagueDoctor as a complete artistic project, bringing together original AI-assisted music, steampunk cosplay, theatrical storytelling, visual art and live performances. I want to take this distinctive character to more stages and audiences, creating shows in which sound and appearance work together to tell a story. I also want to help more people discover AI music and encourage collaboration through La Musica Unisce. My ambition is to keep exploring the meeting point between human creativity and technology while building a recognisable identity that audiences can experience both online and live.

What does the SteampunkPlagueDoctor mask represent to you?

The mask is the heart of my artistic identity. SteampunkPlagueDoctor is a character through which I combine music, cosplay, theatricality and storytelling. Its plague-doctor design and steampunk details create a dark, mechanical world that reflects the atmosphere of my industrial and symphonic metal. On stage, the costume is not simply decoration: it helps transform a musical performance into a visual experience. Behind the mask is a real person with a passion for creativity, who wants to connect with audiences and show that music can be expressed through more than sound alone.

How can AI music bring people together?

I believe AI music can bring people together by opening new creative possibilities and encouraging collaboration. Through La Musica Unisce, I support the idea that different artists, musical backgrounds and approaches can share a common space. AI is a tool that can help turn ideas into music, while people bring the meaning, emotion and identity behind those ideas. My own project combines AI-assisted music with cosplay and live performance to create an experience people can share. I hope it inspires others to experiment, collaborate and discover their own way of expressing themselves.
